Looking After Your Pool

How to Clear a Green Pool

  1. Work out the gallonage of your pool and calculate how much All Swim Shock Chlorine you need for a shock dose.

    Square & Rectangular Pools
Length (ft) x Width (ft) x Average Depth (ft) x 6.25 = Gallons
    Length (m) x Width (m) x Average Depth (m) = m³

    Circular Pools
    Diameter (ft) x Diameter (ft) x Depth (ft) x 4.9 = Gallons
    Diameter (m) x Diameter (m) x Depth (m) x 0.80 = m³

  2. Backwash your pool until the water in the sight glass runs clear. Return to filter position (ensuring you turn off the pump before you move the multiport valve).
  3. Using a bucket filled with fresh water, add the required amount of All Swim Shock Granules for a shock dose and mix to dissolve. Never add water to chemicals, ALWAYS add chemicals to water.
  4. Ensure the filter and pump are on and walk around the perimeter of the pool pouring the solution in. Leave the filter and pump on to keep the water circulating.
  5. After 24 hours, replace the cartridge in your filter, or for sand filters backwash the filter.
  6. Repeat this process every 24 hours until the algae has gone.
  7. Cloudy water indicates dead algae, use Crystal Clear according to dosing instructions or for very cloudy inground pools use Granular Floc.

    Crystal Clear
500ml per 10,000 gallons, then weekly at a rate of 100ml per 10,000 gallons.

    Granular Floc
    32oz per 10,000 gallons.

  8. Upon clear water returning, test the pool water and balance accordingly.

Please Note: This process may need to be repeated for several days before removing algae and regaining clear water. It is not advisable to swim during shock treatment of your pool as the chlorine level will be very high and the pH erratic. Swimming in water with a chlorine level above 3ppm or below 1ppm is not recommended.

Winterising Your Outdoor Pool

  1. Thoroughly backwash the filter. Remove any debris from the pump strainer, skimmers and pool water surface.
  2. Check the pH and adjust to 7.2 – 7.4. Add All Swim Pool Acid to lower the pH or All Swim Pak 2 to raise the pH.
  3. Shock dose with a stabiliser free chlorine such as All Swim Shock Granules or HTH to kill any algae and harmful organisms that may be present. Allow the water to circulate for 3 – 4 hours to ensure thorough mixing.
  4. Close the valve/s from the skimmer/s and lower the water to 10cm – 15cm below the skimmer level.
  5. With the water still circulating through the bottom drain, add All Swim Winter Clear (5 Litres per 12,000 gallons).
  6. Leave the circulation running for long enough to ensure thorough mixing.
  7. Remove ladders, diving boards and summer covers etc and store them away from extremes of temperatures.
  8. Switch off and isolate electricity supply (if in doubt contact an electrician).
  9. Drain the water from the pump, heater and filter taking care to retain any ‘O’ rings from the unions.
  10. Disconnect the pump and store in a frost-free, dry place away from extremes of temperatures.
  11. Leave valves above water level open; those below should be closed and protected from frost damage.
  12. Some weighted and sealed polythene bottles can be used to absorb ice expansion. These should be floated along the length of the pool and secured with strong cord.
  13. Cover the pool with a heavy duty winter pool cover.
  14. Check the appearance of the water occasionally, and test the pH and free chlorine with suitable water test strips while the pool is shut down. If the winter is mild, add another dose of Winteriser in February and ensure thorough mixing and distribution throughout the pool.

Opening Your Outdoor Chlorine Pool

  1. Remove surface water and debris from the winter pool cover before taking it off, then clean and dry it ready for storage.
  2. Using a leaf net, remove as much debris from the pool as possible and clean any tide marks at the water line using All Swim Tile & Liner Cleaner or Waterline Cleaner.
  3. Reconnect the pump if you removed it over the winter making sure all electrical connections are free from dampness. Call in an electrician if you are in any doubt about what you are doing.
  4. Open any valves beneath the water line which may have been closed or plugged.
  5. Check there are no obstructions to the drains, the outlets and the pump strainer basket.
  6. If necessary, top up the water level so it can be drawn through the skimmer/skimmers.
  7. Prime the pump, turn it on and check the filter, skimmer and drains are all working. Do not be too concerned if the water from the circulation is discoloured initially. If the water level was too high because of rain over the winter, pump to waste.
  8. Run the filter for several hours, vacuuming out any remaining debris.
  9. Backwash the filter and top up with fresh water.
  10. Prepare the heat retention cover for use, cleaning off any patches of algae or mould.
  11. Check the pH and adjust to 7.2 – 7.4. Use All Swim Pool Acid to lower the pH or All Swim Pak 2 to raise the pH.
  12. Dose with All Swim Shock to kill any algae and harmful organisms that may be present. Allow the water to circulate for 3 – 4 hours to ensure thorough mixing.
  13. Add Kleen Pool Algicide or All Swim Algicide for algae prevention during the season
